Album Review: Wytchlord by The Dolmen

Wytchlord is by far the best album yet from Dorset based, veteran pirate band The Dolmen, who formed in 1992 and it is clear to see that the band is going from strength to strength. The Dolmen was formed from members of the Dolmen Grove, a pagan organisation based in the UK but with members around the world.

Listening to this album has been a pleasure. When I put the CD into the drive for the first time I was surprised by the diversity of the album, and instantly fell in love with it. From the moment I heard the words “If you call, he will hear you, he is in the forest and on the highest mountain” set to a quiet chant and flute, I was captivated.

The album opens with Midwinter Dances, an upbeat track to get you dancing, but rather than continue with an entire album of rock, rock and more rock, Wytchlord gathers in elements from other genres, such as the electronic vibes found in Voice of the Wind which combines a racey flute, smooth piano and a club style backdrop. The entire album is held together by a deep tribal sound through chant and drum most evident in Ou Na Na. From the slow melodic Piper of Souls to the sensuous Wytchlord My Lover, the vibrant, Celtic Eye of the Morrigan to the beautifully melancholy Where’s the Sun Gone?; the album does not fail to capture the imagination.

The whole album helps to build a picture of an ancient deity and a reverence for the earth and her cycles.
Wytchlord is an album that would fit snugly into just about anyone’s collection.

It’s hard to pick a favourite track from the album as each is full of magic and delight, at a push I’d say that the top two tracks from the album are Eye of the Morrigan and Where’s the Sun Gone?
